Planning a stair runner

A runner brings the carpet, stair finish and edging into the same view. Planning those details together makes the initial conversation more useful and helps the measured specification reflect the whole staircase.

Show the whole route up the stairs

A photograph from the hall and another from the landing can help explain the staircase during your conversation. Include turns, tapered steps and any changes in width. These details guide the measuring and layout discussion; a photograph does not replace the final assessment.

Decide what will remain visible

A runner leaves part of the stairs exposed. Look at the condition and finish of those edges, along with the balustrade and hallway floor. If you plan painting, repairs or other work, discuss how it should be sequenced before fitting is arranged.

Plan the landing as part of the same project

Decide whether you want the runner to meet landing carpet, continue the look or create a contrast. Pattern direction, joins and the transition need planning together. Bring your preferred carpet and edge colour into the conversation, then check the actual product’s suitability for stairs.

Agree the details before ordering

The measured specification should describe the runner width, layout, carpet, compatible edge finish and fitting details. Discuss underlay, preparation and any stair rods as part of the quote. Where the stairs turn or change shape, use the agreed fitting plan rather than a standard width from a photograph.

A useful starting brief

  • The installation postcode and the staircase layout.
  • Your preferred plain, textured or patterned look.
  • Whether the landing should match or contrast.
  • Any decorating, repairs or removal of existing flooring to coordinate.

You can begin with an idea and approximate information. The team will compare suitable samples and check the dimensions and installation before the order is agreed. Keep the carpet and edging care guidance with your order details.
